Signs your furnace needs repair

Furnaces usually give warning signs before they fail. Catching problems early saves money and avoids a no-heat emergency. Call us if you notice any of these:

• Weak or uneven heat. The furnace runs longer than it used to, or some rooms never warm up. Causes range from a clogged filter to a failing blower motor or airflow restriction.
• Short cycling. The furnace starts, runs briefly and shuts off, over and over. This is often a dirty flame sensor, an overheating limit switch or a blocked vent.
• Frequent lockouts. If you keep pressing the reset button, something is tripping a safety control. Resetting it repeatedly hides the problem.
• Strange noises. Booming at ignition, rattling, scraping, whistling or squealing points to ignition, blower or inducer motor problems.
• Yellow or flickering flame. Gas burners should burn a steady blue. A yellow, lazy or flickering flame can mean incomplete combustion and needs attention right away.
• Ignition problems. Older furnaces use a standing pilot and thermocouple. Most newer furnaces use a hot surface igniter and flame sensor. We repair both.
• Rising heating bills. A furnace that needs repair works harder and burns more fuel.
• Carbon monoxide alarm. If your CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 or your gas utility first. Then call us to find the source.
